Not all pirates sailed the seas. Not all legends were men.

Long before the causeways crossed the islands, before the Caloosahatchee was tamed by locks and canals, there were whispers of something wandering the wild banks of Southwest Florida.

A towering, shaggy creature. Neither man nor beast. A solitary soul who belonged to the river long before anyone thought to claim it.

They say he once shared a bottle of rum with the infamous José Gaspar on the shores of the Isle de Captives. The pirate captain offered him a share of his stolen gold, but the creature simply shook his head.

Gold meant nothing to a fellow who already owned every sunrise.

Instead, Gaspar gave him a brass compass and a promise that no pirate under his flag would ever trouble the old riverman.

Centuries passed. Ships sank. Pirates vanished. Towns rose where mangroves once stood.

But Mossback never left.

To this day, duck hunters tell stories of enormous footprints along the muddy banks, strange calls echoing through the cypress, and a shadowy figure disappearing into the mist just as the first flights of teal sweep across the river.

Some swear he’s a Skunk Ape. Others believe he’s a pirate cursed to wander the backwaters forever.

The old rivermen know him by another name.

Old Mossback.

And if you ever find yourself alone on the Caloosahatchee before first light, with nothing but a shotgun, a thermos of coffee, and the sound of wings overhead, remember this:

You might be hunting the river.

But Mossback has been hunting it for two hundred years.
