They say he once drank rum with José Gaspar himself on the beaches of the Isle de Captives, long before the bridges came and the mangroves gave way to civilization.
Gaspar offered him gold. Mossback wanted none. A good shotgun, a brass compass, and the freedom to roam the backwaters were riches enough.
Two centuries later, the old riverman still walks.
Through the cypress and sawgrass, beneath the Spanish moss, where the blackwater meets the tide. His shotgun rides his shoulder, a string of mottled ducks and blue-winged teal hangs from his hand, and the morning mist conceals what the centuries could not claim.
Some call him a Skunk Ape. Others say he’s the ghost of a pirate who never found his way home.
But the old duck hunters know better.
He’s Old Mossback.
