WE HATE HURRICANES.
September 28, 2022. Hurricane Ian made landfall in Southwest Florida, and for us, the storm was only the beginning.
When the winds finally eased, Matlacha was cut off. We were the first mainland captains to make it in by boat. What followed wasn’t fishing. It was pulling dozens of people out and getting them back to safety. Running food, water, fuel, medicine—and, yes, even bales of hay—to people who had lost access to nearly everything. Transporting people from Sanibel. Coordinating medevacs. Going back and forth across water that suddenly became the only road left.
For days, the Salty Pirate wasn’t a charter boat. She was a lifeline.
Ian destroyed homes, boats, businesses and pieces of Southwest Florida that will never look quite the same. But it also showed what this place is made of. Captains became ferries. Neighbors became rescue crews. Strangers became family. Nobody waited around to be told what their job was. You had a boat? You went. You had supplies? You loaded them. Somebody needed help? You figured out how to get there.
So yeah—the shirt is a little ridiculous. The picture that inspired it is ridiculous. Me standing in Ian’s rain, drink in one hand and the Salty Pirate flag in the other.
But the story behind it isn’t.
